An incident involving the alleged attack on a woman journalist at her residence in Agartala has sparked strong condemnation from press organizations, with calls for swift arrests and improved protection for media professionals in Tripura. The attack has intensified concerns about the safety of journalists working in the region, particularly those reporting on local governance and public interest issues.
According to reports, senior journalist Nivedita Chakraborty, associated with a digital news platform, was allegedly targeted at her home by unidentified assailants late at night. The attackers reportedly attempted to force entry into the residence and threatened her, with claims that stones and objects were hurled during the incident. The journalist stated that she narrowly avoided serious injury, while CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts were later cited as part of the ongoing investigation.
The Tripura Working Journalists Association (TWJA) strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a serious attack on press freedom and demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible. The association also expressed concern over what it described as repeated threats and intimidation faced by journalists in the state, calling for stronger institutional safeguards.
In response to the attack, other journalist bodies and federations also issued statements of condemnation, urging authorities to ensure accountability and prevent further incidents. The Indian Federation of Working Journalists (IFWJ) called the attack unacceptable and stressed the need for stricter measures to protect journalists, including proposals for a dedicated journalist protection law in the state.
The incident has also triggered wider debate within media circles about the growing risks faced by reporters, particularly those working in digital and independent journalism spaces. Advocacy groups argue that such attacks create a climate of fear that undermines press freedom and discourages investigative reporting on sensitive issues.
