Two Bangladeshi journalists were injured after allegedly being attacked by members of a local drug trafficking group while reporting in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, highlighting ongoing safety risks faced by media workers covering crime and corruption in the country.
The attack took place in the Rajashon area of Savar when a television news team from Desh TV and SA TV was gathering information on alleged narcotics operations in the neighborhood. According to the journalists, the team had been interviewing residents and documenting claims about drug activity before they were confronted by a group linked to an alleged drug dealer identified as Shamim.
During the assault, Desh TV senior reporter Tayefur Rahman Tuhin and SA TV correspondent Saddam Hossain were reportedly stabbed, while other members of the media crew were beaten. Journalists said attackers also vandalized their vehicle and stole cameras, wallets, cash, and other reporting equipment.
Victims further alleged that the attackers briefly held the journalists inside a nearby garage and attempted to pressure them into signing a written statement before police arrived at the scene. The injured reporters were later taken to the hospital for treatment under police supervision.
Police confirmed that several suspects had been detained following the incident and said operations were continuing to arrest additional individuals accused of involvement in the attack. Authorities also stated that legal proceedings had begun against the suspects connected to the assault.
The incident sparked concern among journalists and press freedom advocates in Bangladesh, where reporters covering criminal networks, political violence, and corruption have frequently faced intimidation and physical attacks. Media rights organizations have repeatedly called on authorities to improve protections for journalists and ensure accountability for violence targeting the press.
Bangladesh has witnessed several high-profile attacks on journalists and media outlets in recent years, including assaults during protests, raids on newsrooms, and violent harassment linked to political and criminal groups. Press freedom organizations argue that repeated attacks contribute to a climate of fear that discourages investigative reporting and limits independent journalism.
