Bhutan marked World Press Freedom Day with a major recognition of journalistic achievement, as 22 media professionals were honored at the 10th Annual Journalism Awards held in Thimphu. The ceremony, organized by the Journalists’ Association of Bhutan in collaboration with government institutions, highlighted the country’s growing commitment to strengthening media standards and celebrating excellence across the profession.
The awards spanned multiple categories, recognizing contributions across print, radio, television, and digital journalism. Out of a broader set of awards, a significant number focused on print reporting, while broadcast and digital storytelling also received notable attention. Organizers emphasized that the diversity of categories reflects the evolving media landscape in Bhutan, where traditional and emerging platforms coexist and expand public access to information.
Several journalists received multiple honors for their work. Among them, Tenzing Lamsang of The Bhutanese was recognized for both investigative and business reporting, while Tshering Dema received awards for coverage related to crime and social issues. Environmental reporting and disability-focused journalism were also highlighted, underscoring the role of media in addressing public interest topics and amplifying underreported issues.
Broadcast journalism featured prominently, with reporters and production teams from Bhutan Broadcasting Service receiving awards for television hosting, news reporting, and documentary storytelling. Radio programming was similarly recognized, reflecting the continued importance of radio as a widely accessible medium in the country.
The awards also emphasized emerging talent. Yam Kumar Poudel of Kuensel was named Most Promising Young Journalist, highlighting efforts to support the next generation of media professionals. In the digital sphere, Tandin Tshering received recognition for social media journalism, signaling the increasing influence of online platforms in shaping Bhutan’s media environment.
Held as part of World Press Freedom Day observances, the event served not only as a celebration of achievement but also as a reaffirmation of journalism’s role in promoting transparency, accountability, and informed public discourse. Organizers noted that such recognition is essential for encouraging high standards and fostering a resilient and independent media sector.
Overall, the ceremony highlighted the continued development of Bhutan’s media landscape, positioning journalism as a key pillar in the country’s democratic and social progress.
