Filipino-American journalist Pablo S. Torre and his podcast team have been awarded the 2026 Pulitzer Prize in Audio Reporting for an investigative series examining alleged salary cap circumvention within the National Basketball Association, bringing international recognition to a deep dive into sports finance and accountability in professional basketball.
The winning work was produced through Torre’s podcast Pablo Torre Finds Out, which investigated claims that the Los Angeles Clippers structured payments in ways that may have bypassed league salary cap rules. The reporting focused on allegations involving a multimillion-dollar endorsement arrangement tied to NBA star Kawhi Leonard and a now-bankrupt environmental company, Aspiration, which was reportedly linked to financial backing from team ownership.
According to Pulitzer officials, the podcast was recognised for its innovative approach to audio journalism, combining investigative reporting with narrative storytelling to explain complex financial arrangements in professional sports. The series was highlighted as an example of how modern podcasting can be used as a serious investigative platform rather than solely a commentary medium.
The investigation reportedly spanned multiple episodes released in 2025 and drew on financial records, corporate filings, and league-related documentation to trace how the alleged arrangements may have functioned. The reporting also contributed to wider public scrutiny of financial practices in professional sports and prompted ongoing discussions within the NBA regarding compliance and transparency standards.
Torre, a former ESPN analyst and Harvard graduate, has built a reputation in recent years for investigative journalism that blends sports reporting with deeper examinations of institutional power and financial systems. His podcast has previously covered topics ranging from sports governance to broader issues involving influence and accountability in professional leagues.
The award has been widely viewed as a milestone for audio journalism and for Filipino-American representation in global media recognition, underscoring the increasing prominence of investigative podcasts in mainstream journalism awards.
