Malaysia’s journalism and literary community gathered in Kuala Lumpur to honour veteran writer and National Journalist Laureate Adibah Amin, celebrating her enduring contributions while rallying support for her ongoing medical care.
The tribute night, held at a prominent Kuala Lumpur venue, brought together journalists, editors, cultural figures, and admirers in a collective show of respect for a figure widely regarded as one of the country’s most influential voices in media and literature. The event also marked the launch of As I Was Passing (Legacy Edition), a commemorative publication featuring a curated selection of her essays and columns, along with previously unpublished photographs and personal elements that offer deeper insight into her life and work.
Organised by supporters and members of the media fraternity, the evening served both as a celebration and a fundraiser. Approximately RM100,000 was raised through donations and book contributions, with proceeds designated to support Adibah Amin’s long-term healthcare needs.
Speakers at the event reflected on her profound impact across multiple disciplines, highlighting her roles not only as a journalist but also as an educator, translator, novelist, and cultural commentator. Her ability to write fluently in both Bahasa Melayu and English, combined with her accessible and insightful style, helped shape public discourse and influence generations of readers and journalists.
Tributes underscored her legacy as a pioneer in Malaysian journalism, including her historic recognition as the first woman to be named National Journalist Laureate. Colleagues and admirers described her work as both intellectually engaging and deeply human, often capturing the nuances of Malaysian society with clarity, warmth, and wit.
Despite her absence due to declining health, her presence was strongly felt throughout the evening. Family members conveyed her gratitude while noting the challenges she currently faces, including limited mobility after years of illness.
The launch of the legacy edition of her writings was framed as an effort to preserve her voice for future generations. Attendees emphasised the importance of keeping her work accessible, ensuring that her reflections on culture, identity, and everyday life continue to resonate in an evolving media landscape.
The event ultimately stood as both a tribute and a reaffirmation of Adibah Amin’s lasting influence on Malaysian journalism and storytelling.
