Independent nonprofit newsroom Planet Detroit received multiple honors at the 2026 Society of Professional Journalists Detroit Chapter Excellence in Journalism Awards, earning recognition for reporting focused on environmental justice, public health, and community issues across Detroit and Southeast Michigan. The organization announced that its journalists secured awards across several categories during the annual regional competition.
Planet Detroit editor Nina Ignaczak won first place in the Environment Reporting category for a series examining pollution, climate change, and environmental health challenges affecting Detroit residents. Judges praised the reporting for combining data-driven journalism with community-centered storytelling and for highlighting the impact of environmental issues on marginalized neighborhoods.
Reporter Claire Charlton also received recognition for feature writing and explanatory journalism related to housing, climate resilience, and urban infrastructure. Additional awards went to Planet Detroit contributors and collaborative reporting projects focused on public transportation, flooding, air quality, and local governance.
The Society of Professional Journalists Detroit Chapter’s annual awards recognize excellence across print, digital, television, radio, and investigative journalism throughout Michigan. The competition includes entries from major regional news organizations, nonprofit outlets, independent journalists, and student media.
Planet Detroit was founded in 2019 as a nonprofit local newsroom dedicated to reporting on climate, environment, public health, and sustainability issues in Detroit. The outlet has increasingly gained national attention for investigative reporting examining industrial pollution, water infrastructure, energy policy, and environmental inequities affecting low-income communities.
The awards reflected broader recognition for nonprofit and community-centered journalism organizations in the United States, particularly outlets focused on local accountability reporting and environmental issues. Media analysts and journalism advocates have increasingly highlighted nonprofit newsrooms as an important part of sustaining local journalism amid ongoing financial pressures facing traditional newspapers and broadcasters.
Online reactions following the awards praised Planet Detroit’s reporting for elevating community voices and covering issues often overlooked by larger media organizations. Supporters argued the recognition demonstrated growing demand for locally focused investigative journalism centered on environmental justice and public-interest reporting.
