Guatemalan journalist Carlos Humberto Cal Ical was killed in an armed attack outside his home in San Cristóbal Verapaz, Alta Verapaz, on 26 April 2026, prompting national and international calls for a swift and transparent investigation into the motive behind his murder. Press freedom organisations have urged authorities to determine whether the killing was connected to his journalistic work.
According to initial reports, Cal Ical was intercepted by unidentified armed individuals while returning home in the evening. He was shot multiple times and died at the scene before emergency responders could assist. Local fire services confirmed his death, and his body was later identified by family members.
Cal Ical, who was 47, worked independently and contributed to several local media outlets, including Radio Tezulutlán, Stereo Gerardi, Al Día, and Noticias La Esfinge Cobán. He was also active in community reporting through social media, where he shared local news and developments in the Alta Verapaz region.
Following his death, press freedom organisations including Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the Inter American Press Association, and the International Federation of Journalists condemned the killing and demanded a full investigation. These groups stressed that authorities must not only identify the perpetrators but also examine whether the attack was linked to their reporting activities.
RSF noted that Cal Ical had reported on local issues such as infrastructure problems, community complaints, environmental concerns, and regional development disputes, topics that often place journalists in vulnerable positions in northern Guatemala. The organisation warned that Alta Verapaz remains a high-risk area due to ongoing conflicts related to land, mining, and environmental issues.
The Inter American Press Association described the killing as part of a broader pattern of violence and impunity affecting journalists in the region, while warning that such attacks create a climate of intimidation for media workers across the Americas.
Guatemalan authorities have stated that investigations are underway, though the motive remains officially undetermined. Press organisations continue to press for accountability, highlighting that past cases of violence against journalists in the country have frequently gone unresolved.
The killing adds to growing concerns over journalist safety in Guatemala, where media workers reporting on social conflict, corruption, and environmental issues face persistent threats and violence.
