Indonesia has intensified diplomatic efforts and condemnation after several Indonesian journalists and activists were detained by Israeli forces while participating in a humanitarian flotilla mission attempting to reach Gaza.
The journalists were aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla 2.0, an international civilian mission carrying humanitarian supplies, including food and medical aid, intended for Palestinians in Gaza. According to Indonesian media organisations and officials, Israeli naval forces intercepted the vessels in international waters near Cyprus before detaining passengers and crew members.
The Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) Indonesia strongly condemned the operation, describing the interception as a violation of international law and press freedom. AJI demanded the immediate release of all detained journalists, arguing that reporters covering humanitarian missions should be protected and allowed to work without intimidation or arrest. The organisation said the flotilla was carrying civilians and humanitarian assistance rather than military equipment.
Indonesia’s government confirmed that several Indonesian nationals, including journalists, were among those detained. Officials stated that the Foreign Ministry and Indonesian embassies in the region were coordinating with international partners and diplomatic missions to secure access to the detainees and ensure their safety. Authorities also said they were considering possible legal action in response to the incident.
Communication Minister Meutya Hafid expressed concern over reports involving Indonesian reporters covering the Gaza mission, while the Indonesian Press Council urged stronger diplomatic measures to secure their release. Government representatives emphasized that journalists have a right to report from humanitarian operations without facing detention or interference.
According to Indonesian media reports, some of the detained journalists managed to send messages and videos before losing communication, asking Jakarta to intervene. Civil society organisations and media groups in Indonesia later organized campaigns demanding immediate international pressure on Israel.
The flotilla interception also triggered wider international criticism. Several countries and rights organisations accused Israel of unlawfully stopping humanitarian missions in international waters. Israel, however, defended the operation by arguing that the naval blockade on Gaza remained necessary for security reasons and described the flotilla as a political provocation.
Indonesia has consistently supported Palestinian statehood and repeatedly condemned Israeli military actions in Gaza during the ongoing war. Officials said Jakarta would continue working with international partners to seek the release of all Indonesian citizens detained during the humanitarian mission.
