The family of a Scottish academic and activist detained by Israeli forces while participating in a humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza has appealed for his safe return, amid growing international concern over the interception of civilian aid vessels in international waters.
According to reports from The National and The Herald, the Scottish man was among hundreds of activists and volunteers involved in the Global Sumud Flotilla, an international civilian mission attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and challenge Israel’s naval blockade on the territory. Israeli naval forces intercepted several vessels connected to the flotilla near Cyprus before detaining participants aboard.
Family members said they had lost contact with the activist following the interception and were deeply concerned about his safety and well-being. Relatives urged the British government to intervene diplomatically and secure information regarding his condition, location, and legal status. They described the situation as distressing and criticized what they viewed as insufficient public action by British authorities.
The flotilla involved activists, medical workers, academics, journalists, and humanitarian volunteers from dozens of countries. Organizers stated that the mission was intended to draw attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and deliver supplies, including food, medicine, and essential aid items. Israeli authorities, however, defended the operation by arguing that attempts to breach the naval blockade violated security restrictions linked to the ongoing conflict with Hamas.
Videos released by some participants before communications were cut showed activists claiming they were being unlawfully detained after Israeli forces boarded the vessels in international waters. Organizers of the flotilla accused Israel of carrying out a “kidnapping” operation, while Israeli officials described the mission as a political provocation rather than a legitimate humanitarian effort.
The detention has sparked criticism from campaigners, human rights organizations, and politicians across several countries whose citizens were aboard the flotilla. Governments, including Turkey, Ireland, Spain, and Australia, have sought information about their nationals detained during the operation.
The incident has also renewed wider debate over Israel’s blockade of Gaza, the legality of intercepting civilian vessels in international waters, and the treatment of activists and journalists participating in humanitarian missions connected to the Palestinian territory. Press freedom and human rights advocates have continued calling for the immediate release of detainees and greater international scrutiny of the operation.
