Bangladesh Journalism Conference 2026 Highlights Press Freedom Concerns Over Ownership and Editorial Independence
May 12, 2026The African Union Commission has officially opened online registration for journalists wishing to cover the 8th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union, Regional Economic Communities, and Regional Mechanisms, scheduled to take place from 24 to 27 June 2026 in El Alamein, Egypt. The announcement forms part of preparations for one of the AU’s key annual coordination events focused on continental integration and policy alignment.
According to the African Union’s Information and Communication Directorate, media accreditation is now available through the official AU online platform, with journalists required to complete registration ahead of the stated deadline of 10 June 2026. Only accredited media personnel will be permitted to access coverage facilities and report on proceedings from the event.
The Mid-Year Coordination Meeting serves as a high-level forum bringing together the African Union, Regional Economic Communities, and regional mechanisms to review progress on continental integration initiatives and strengthen cooperation among member states. The 2026 edition will also include preparatory sessions involving the AU Permanent Representatives’ Committee and the Executive Council before the main summit.
The meetings are expected to include discussions on policy coordination, implementation of AU decisions, and harmonization of regional and continental programmes aimed at advancing the goals of Agenda 2063. The event typically features both closed and open sessions, with selected segments available for media coverage either in person or through virtual access links provided by organisers.
As part of standard arrangements, the AU has indicated that additional media guidelines, including accreditation confirmation procedures, interview request protocols, and briefing schedules, will be circulated ahead of the meeting. Journalists will also have access to a dedicated media centre at the venue equipped with communication and reporting facilities.
The Mid-Year Coordination Meeting was established in 2017 as a mechanism to replace parts of the traditional mid-year summit structure, aiming to improve alignment between the African Union and regional bodies on development priorities and integration strategies.
The opening of media registration marks the start of logistical preparations for coverage of the 2026 meeting, which is expected to draw participation from senior AU leadership, regional bloc representatives, and member state officials.
