The Imperial Photojournalists Appreciation Awards 2026, held in Dhaka, brought together leading figures from Bangladesh’s media sector and international guests, highlighting the continued importance of photojournalism in documenting social realities and public events.
The ceremony took place at Imperial Hotel International and was organized by the Photojournalist Appreciation Award 2026 Celebration Council, recognizing excellence and long-term contributions to the field.
A total of 37 photojournalists were honored during the event. Of these, 27 recipients were from Bangladesh, while 10 photographers from Nepal received special recognition, reflecting a cross-border dimension to the awards and an effort to foster regional collaboration within the profession.
Among those recognized were photojournalists from major Bangladeshi outlets, including contributors to New Age and other national publications. Veteran Reuters photographer Rafiqur Rahman received special acknowledgment for his 57-year career, underscoring the awards’ emphasis on both emerging and long-standing contributions to visual journalism.
The event was attended by senior officials and media figures. State Minister for Social Welfare Farzana Sharmin participated as chief guest, alongside Nepal’s ambassador to Bangladesh and senior editorial leadership from national media organizations. Their remarks emphasized the societal role of photojournalists in capturing critical moments, from humanitarian crises to everyday life, often under challenging conditions.
Speakers at the ceremony highlighted that photojournalism extends beyond technical skill, framing it as a public responsibility that documents both hardship and resilience. The recognition of photographers who work in difficult environments reflects broader acknowledgment of the risks associated with visual reporting, particularly in covering disasters, conflict, and political developments.
The event concluded with a cultural program and formal reception, reinforcing its dual role as both a recognition platform and a networking space for media professionals.
While primarily celebratory, the awards also implicitly underscore ongoing discussions about press freedom and journalist safety, particularly for photojournalists who often operate on the front lines of major events.
Overall, the ceremony reflects a continued effort within Bangladesh’s media landscape to elevate the status of photojournalism, encourage professional standards, and promote regional cooperation, while recognizing the critical function of visual storytelling in shaping public understanding.
