The Chinese Embassy in Nepal has denied allegations circulating on social media that Chinese nationals attempted to bribe Nepali journalists to publish negative reports targeting local political figures, calling the accusations false and politically motivated.
The controversy emerged after online claims alleged that Chinese individuals had approached journalists from several Nepali media organizations with financial offers in exchange for unfavorable coverage against certain politicians. The allegations quickly spread across social media platforms and sparked debate within Nepal’s political and media circles.
In an official statement, the Chinese Embassy said it was “deeply shocked” by the accusations and firmly rejected the claims. Embassy representatives described the reports as deliberate attempts to damage China’s reputation and undermine relations between China and Nepal. The statement stressed that Beijing follows a policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries and supports Nepal’s sovereignty, political stability, and economic development.
The embassy also urged Nepali authorities to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the origin of the rumors and take legal action against individuals responsible for spreading what it called misinformation. Chinese officials further stated they were prepared to cooperate with Nepal on law enforcement and security matters if necessary.
The incident has fueled broader discussions in Nepal about foreign influence, media independence, and political tensions linked to regional powers. Some critics and commentators pointed to previous controversies involving Chinese pressure on media and political institutions in Nepal, although no direct evidence connecting the current allegations to official Chinese activity has been publicly presented.
The reports also intensified debate online, where users shared competing narratives over the credibility of the accusations and the role of foreign actors in Nepali politics. Local media organizations and journalists have not publicly confirmed any bribery attempts, and no formal criminal case has been announced at the time of reporting.
The controversy comes at a sensitive time in Nepal’s political environment, where relations with neighboring China and India remain closely scrutinized. Analysts say allegations involving foreign influence often attract significant public attention because of Nepal’s strategic position between the two regional powers. Despite the growing debate, Chinese officials maintained that the accusations were baseless and intended to harm bilateral relations between Kathmandu and Beijing.
