Journalists, activists, students, and civil society representatives gathered across Assam to commemorate the 30th death anniversary of prominent journalist and human rights activist Parag Kumar Das, remembering his contributions to independent journalism and public discourse in the region. Memorial events held in Sivasagar and other parts of Assam paid tribute to Das’s legacy as a fearless writer known for his criticism of state violence, social injustice, and political extremism.
Das, founder of the Assamese magazine Boodbar and a widely recognized public intellectual, was assassinated on May 17, 1996, in Guwahati while returning home with his son. His killing remains one of the most significant attacks on journalism in Assam’s modern history and continues to symbolize the risks faced by journalists reporting on conflict and political unrest.
As part of the anniversary observances, organizers presented the Parag Kumar Das Journalism Award to recognize journalists committed to ethical and courageous reporting. Speakers at the event highlighted the importance of protecting independent journalism and preserving democratic values at a time when media workers increasingly face intimidation, legal pressure, and political polarization.
Participants described Das as a journalist who consistently challenged authority and defended civil liberties through his reporting and commentary. Memorial discussions focused on his intellectual contributions to Assamese society, including his writings on nationalism, human rights, and social justice. Journalists attending the events also reflected on the continued dangers faced by reporters covering sensitive political and security issues in India’s northeastern region.
Several speakers warned that threats to press freedom remain a serious concern and argued that Das’s legacy continues to inspire younger generations of journalists committed to independent reporting. Organizers emphasized the need to strengthen protections for journalists and defend spaces for critical public debate.
Tributes published by local media outlets described Das as one of Assam’s most influential journalists and public thinkers. Commemorative events included public discussions, cultural programmes, and tributes honoring his impact on journalism and civil society. Thirty years after his killing, supporters and colleagues continue to remember Parag Kumar Das as a symbol of fearless journalism and resistance against the suppression of free expression.
