May 15, 2025May 15, 2025 – Palestine/Israel –
On May 15, 2025, Palestinian journalist Hassan Marzouq Samour was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Bani Suhaila, east of Khan Younis, Gaza, along with 13 members of his family. Samour, 45, was a radio presenter and producer for Al-Aqsa Radio. The attack occurred while the family was sheltering in a tent, highlighting the ongoing dangers faced by civilians and journalists amid the intensifying conflict.
Samour’s death is part of a broader escalation of Israeli military operations in Gaza, which reportedly resulted in at least 70 Palestinian casualties that day alone. The strikes took place as U.S. President Donald Trump visited the Middle East to broker a ceasefire, further intensifying the political and humanitarian stakes of the conflict.
According to human rights organizations, the airstrike that killed Samour was not an isolated incident. Since the war began in October 2023, over 216 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza, making it one of the deadliest periods for the press in recent history. Many of these journalists were killed while covering the war or sheltering with their families.
Samour’s death has sparked condemnation from international human rights groups, press freedom advocates, and journalists’ unions, who view his killing as emblematic of the broader risks faced by media workers in conflict zones. Organizations have called for greater accountability and protection for journalists, emphasizing that press workers must not be targeted in armed conflict under international humanitarian law.
The airstrike on Samour and his family underscores the shrinking space for journalists to operate safely in Gaza and raises serious concerns about the safety of civilians, especially as airstrikes continue to hit densely populated areas. His death serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of war and the urgent need for measures to protect journalists, civilians, and humanitarian workers alike. Samour leaves behind a legacy of dedication to storytelling in one of the world’s most dangerous reporting environments.
