On May 13, 2025, Takudzwa Gift Washaya, a young journalist from Zimbabwe, was abducted and brutally assaulted in Harare. Washaya, who is affiliated with the opposition party Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC), was taken from his home in Sunningdale by armed men driving a black Toyota GD6. The assailants injected Washaya with an unknown substance before subjecting him to a violent physical attack. He was later found unconscious, suffering from severe facial swelling and multiple bruises, as shown in disturbing photographs shared by the CCC.
The assault has sparked outrage from both local and international press freedom groups, who believe the attack was politically motivated. Washaya had recently been reporting on political events and government actions, which have led to increased tensions in Zimbabwe’s already fraught media environment. The CCC has condemned the assault, calling it a clear example of growing repression against journalists who challenge the ruling party’s narrative. However, details surrounding the specific reasons behind the attack remain unclear.
The incident highlights the increasing risks faced by journalists in Zimbabwe, where press freedom has been severely restricted, and government critics are often targeted. Human rights organizations have expressed concern that such attacks are part of a broader pattern of intimidation against independent media and political dissenters.
Washaya is currently receiving medical treatment for his injuries, but his abduction has left a chilling impact on the local journalism community. As of now, there have been no arrests, and the identities of the perpetrators remain unknown. The attack serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that journalists in Zimbabwe face while reporting on politically sensitive issues.
The case has drawn attention to the need for greater protections for journalists and the importance of holding those responsible for such attacks accountable.
