On March 19, 2025, Turkish journalist İsmail Saymaz was detained by Istanbul police as part of a renewed investigation into the 2013 Gezi Park protests. Two days later, he was released under house arrest, prohibited from leaving the country, and had his passports revoked. Prosecutors accuse Saymaz of “aiding an attempt to overthrow the government,” alleging that he played an active role in the protests, disseminated misleading information on social media, and incited public unrest against law enforcement. They are reportedly seeking a prison sentence of 15 to 20 years.
Saymaz, a prominent investigative journalist and columnist for Halk TV, is known for his critical reporting on government policies. Authorities claim he had extensive contact with key figures associated with the Gezi Park protests, including Osman Kavala, who is serving a life sentence for allegedly orchestrating the demonstrations. Prosecutors allege that Saymaz was involved in discussions about establishing a news website and a television channel to promote the protests.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has condemned the house arrest, urging Turkish authorities to lift the restrictions and cease using the judiciary to suppress press freedom. CPJ emphasized that Saymaz’s detention is part of a broader pattern of targeting journalists in Turkey, particularly those covering politically sensitive topics.
In his defense, Saymaz has stated that he is being targeted for his journalistic work and that the charges are an attempt to silence dissenting voices. He maintains that his interactions with protest organizers were part of his professional duties as a journalist. The case has drawn international attention, highlighting ongoing concerns about press freedom and the use of legal mechanisms to stifle criticism in Turkey.
