Seven journalists were attacked in Sweida, Syria, on May 6, 2025, while covering a political agreement involving local factions, government officials, and religious leaders. The journalists were assaulted by armed members of a local group, underscoring the ongoing dangers faced by media workers in the region. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) strongly condemned the attack and called on Syrian authorities to ensure the protection of journalists and to uphold press freedom. RSF emphasized the need for the government to provide a secure environment for reporters, allowing them to do their work without fear of retaliation or violence.
The attack occurred during the signing of a political accord between the Syrian government, civil leaders, and militia factions in Sweida, a region long under the control of local militias. Journalists who were present to cover the event were targeted as tensions in the area continue to rise. The assailants reportedly harassed and attacked the media workers, forcing them to leave the premises.
In response to the incident, the Syrian Journalists Union expressed concern but also recognized the swift actions taken by the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Information. The Syrian government assured that an investigation would be launched into the assault, and efforts were made to protect the journalists who were involved. Notably, Mohammad al-Ibrahim, a journalist for the General Authority for Radio and Television, was one of the individuals attacked, and the union praised the immediate actions taken to address the situation.
Despite these actions, Syria remains a dangerous environment for journalists. The country’s ongoing civil war and political unrest make reporting a perilous activity. RSF continues to advocate for the protection of journalists in Syria, urging the government to ensure their safety and guarantee a free press. The organization highlights that the ability to report freely is essential for peace and accountability in conflict zones.
