Seven Journalists Attacked in Syria: RSF Urges Authorities to Protect Press Freedom
April 21, 2025April 21, 2025 – USA –
In April 2025, the Middle East Broadcasting Networks (MBN), the U.S.-funded Arabic-language media organization that operates Alhurra TV and Radio Sawa, laid off around 90% of its staff following significant budget cuts. These cuts, mandated by the U.S. government, have left many Arab journalists in a state of uncertainty, with approximately 300 U.S.-based employees now facing the loss of their jobs and legal status. Around 60 journalists, many of whom were on temporary work visas, are at risk of deportation, while others are caught in legal limbo, unable to secure new employment or severance packages.
This round of layoffs came as part of a broader $20 million budget cut imposed on MBN, which also led to the merger of the Alhurra and Alhurra Iraq channels. The cuts were necessitated by a reduction in funding approved by the U.S. Congress, which saw MBN’s budget shrink significantly. As a result, 160 positions were eliminated, including roles crucial to the operation of the network’s programming.
The layoffs have sparked outcry from those affected, many of whom were left with little financial support or guidance regarding their next steps. Journalists who have worked with Alhurra for years now face an uncertain future, with many trying to navigate the complexities of U.S. immigration and labor laws. Some are looking at options to return to the Middle East, while others are exploring legal avenues to seek compensation for the lack of severance and abrupt termination of their contracts.
The situation highlights the vulnerability of foreign journalists working for government-funded media organizations in the U.S., where sudden policy changes and funding cuts can drastically impact their livelihoods. The lack of a clear support system for these workers underscores the challenges they face, especially in light of recent political shifts and budgetary constraints.
