Journalists from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette have been named finalists in the Pittsburgh Black Media Federation’s (PBMF) Robert L. Vann Media Awards competition, an annual program recognizing outstanding coverage of African American and African diaspora communities across Western Pennsylvania and surrounding regions. The announcement highlights the continued presence of major newsroom contributions in a contest designed to elevate excellence in reporting on marginalized communities.
The Vann Media Awards, organized by PBMF, are among the region’s most established journalism honors, with categories spanning print, broadcast, digital, and multimedia storytelling. The program evaluates entries based on their depth, accuracy, and impact, particularly in coverage that reflects social issues, community experiences, and underrepresented voices.
This year’s competition includes professional and student categories, with finalists selected through a judging process conducted by experienced journalists and media educators from outside the region. Winners are scheduled to be announced at an awards ceremony in late May 2026 at Point Park University in Pittsburgh.
The recognition of Post-Gazette journalists reflects the paper’s ongoing participation in regional journalism initiatives that emphasize community-centered reporting. The Vann Awards specifically encourage coverage that highlights African American experiences and broader diaspora issues, aiming to improve representation within mainstream media narratives.
PBMF, which has operated since the 1970s, has long positioned the Vann Awards as both a celebration and a professional development platform for journalists. The program also supports scholarships and training opportunities for emerging media professionals, reinforcing its broader mission to expand diversity within newsrooms.
The awards come at a time when journalism organizations continue to emphasize the importance of equitable coverage and inclusive storytelling. By recognizing finalists across multiple categories, the competition underscores the role of local reporting in shaping public understanding of race, identity, and community issues.
As the final winners are prepared for announcement, the selection of finalists marks an important stage in the annual cycle of recognition, reflecting both individual journalistic achievement and the broader institutional effort to promote fairness and representation in media coverage.
