Cevheri Güven, a Turkish investigative journalist now living in exile in Germany, continues to face persistent threats to his life despite seeking asylum. Since relocating in 2017, Güven has been under constant police protection, required to inform authorities whenever he leaves his residence. He also wears a wrist device resembling a watch, which serves as a security bracelet allowing him to send an alarm in case of danger.
Güven’s troubles began in Turkey, where he served as editor-in-chief of Nokta, a political news weekly. In November 2015, he and his assistant Murat Çapan were arrested on charges of “inciting an uprising” due to a magazine cover warning of potential civil unrest in Turkey. Following the failed coup attempt in July 2016, Nokta was shut down during the state of emergency declared by the government.
Even in exile, Güven’s safety remains precarious. In 2022, a pro-government Turkish daily published a secretly taken photo of him and revealed his home address on its front page, intensifying concerns about his security.
Güven’s experience underscores the broader challenges faced by exiled journalists. Organizations like the JX Fund have been established to support journalists in exile, providing grants and structural aid to media outlets operating under threat. Since April 2022, the JX Fund has supported 85 exiled media outlets across 25 countries, highlighting the global nature of this issue.
The plight of journalists like Güven serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threats to press freedom worldwide. Despite seeking refuge, many continue to face dangers that impede their ability to report freely and safely.
