In April 2025, Dutch authorities made a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the 2021 assassination of renowned crime journalist Peter R. de Vries. A 39-year-old man, identified as Raily B., was arrested in Willemstad, Curaçao, on suspicion of playing a leading role in the criminal organization responsible for de Vries’s murder. At the time of his arrest, Raily B. had been incarcerated in Curaçao since 2014 for unrelated offenses. Following his apprehension, he was extradited to the Netherlands to face charges.
Peter R. de Vries was a prominent Dutch investigative journalist known for his work on high-profile criminal cases. On July 6, 2021, he was shot in broad daylight on a busy street in Amsterdam and succumbed to his injuries nine days later. His assassination sent shockwaves through the Netherlands and underscored the growing threat posed by organized crime to press freedom.
The arrest of Raily B. is part of an ongoing effort by Dutch prosecutors to bring all individuals involved in the murder to justice. In June 2024, six men were convicted for their roles in the assassination, receiving sentences ranging from 10 to 28 years. However, investigations continued to identify those who orchestrated the killing.
De Vries had been serving as an advisor to a key witness in a major trial against Ridouan Taghi, a notorious Dutch-Moroccan crime boss. While Taghi has been convicted of multiple murders and sentenced to life imprisonment, he has not been formally charged in connection with de Vries’s death.
The arrest of Raily B. marks a significant development in the pursuit of justice for Peter R. de Vries. His son, Royce de Vries, expressed hope that this arrest represents a major step forward in unraveling the full extent of the conspiracy behind his father’s murder.
