The Mesopotamia Women Journalists Association (MKG) has released a series of reports detailing a significant increase in violations against journalists in Turkey, particularly targeting women journalists.
In March 2025, MKG documented at least 54 violations against journalists, including physical violence, detentions, and digital harassment. These incidents intensified following the March 8 International Women’s Day protests and operations against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. The report emphasized that journalists are being systematically targeted for simply reporting news.
The April 2025 report indicated that nine women journalists remained imprisoned, with 17 others facing trial for their journalistic activities. The report highlighted that women journalists are subjected to “double pressure” due to their profession and gender, facing judicial harassment, physical obstructions, and digital censorship. MKG stated that these actions aim to silence journalists and suppress the public’s right to information.
In January 2025, MKG reported that nine women journalists were under arrest, emphasizing that systematic pressures are applied more severely not only because of their professional activities but also because they are women.
These reports underscore a troubling trend of increasing repression against journalists in Turkey, with women journalists facing heightened risks. MKG continues to advocate for press freedom and the protection of journalists’ rights in the face of these challenges.
