Daniel Owusu Koranteng, a 35-year-old businessman and former associate of slain investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, has been formally charged with murder and abetment in connection with Suale’s assassination in January 2019. Koranteng, also known as Nana Amakye, appeared before the Madina District Court on April 2, 2025, where prosecutors amended the initial charges to include abetment to commit murder. The court remanded him into custody, with his next appearance scheduled for April 17.
The prosecution alleges that Koranteng provided photographs of Suale to former Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong, who subsequently aired them on Net2 TV, calling for retribution against the journalist. Suale reportedly confronted Koranteng via WhatsApp, accusing him of supplying the images. On January 16, 2019, Suale was shot and killed in Madina. Investigations suggest that Koranteng led two other individuals, who are currently at large, to Suale’s residence, where the murder occurred. Call records place Koranteng near the scene before and after the incident.
Koranteng was initially arrested on March 15, 2025, after returning to Ghana from the United Kingdom, where he had fled in 2019 following the murder. He had declined multiple police invitations for questioning before his departure. During interrogation, Koranteng admitted to knowing Suale and visiting Agyapong but denied selling the photographs to anyone.
The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting concerns over press freedom and the safety of journalists in Ghana. The prosecution continues to seek the apprehension of the two other suspects involved in the murder.
