Ojinika Okpe, renowned broadcast journalist and anchor of “What’s Trending” on ARISE News, has been awarded the 2025 Investigative Journalist of the Year by the Verbatim Media Group. The accolade was presented during the Verbatim Media Awards (VMA) ceremony on April 3, 2025, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, coinciding with Verbatim’s 13th anniversary celebration.
The Verbatim Board of Editors recognized Okpe for her “outstanding commitment to investigative journalism,” highlighting her fearless reporting, depth of analysis, and dedication to uncovering hard truths. Her segment, “What’s Trending,” was specifically cited as a trailblazing example of impactful journalism.
Okpe’s career spans modeling, film production, and journalism. She began as a model, gaining recognition through the Mnet Face of Africa competition, and later transitioned into television. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Communication with a minor in Film Production from St. John’s University, New York, in 2006, and furthered her studies at the New York Film Academy.
Her work on ARISE News has been characterized by thorough research, compelling storytelling, and an unyielding commitment to uncovering the truth. Through her reporting, Okpe has tackled complex issues, providing audiences with nuanced insights into societal challenges.
The Verbatim Media Awards also honored other distinguished individuals, including Governors Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), Dikko Radda (Katsina), and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara) for exemplary leadership.
