Palestinian journalist burned alive as result of Israeli strikes in Khan Younis

On May 13, 2025, Palestinian journalist Hassan Eslaiah was killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, Gaza, where he was receiving treatment for injuries sustained in a previous attack. Eslaiah, a prominent photojournalist and director of the Gaza-based Alam24 news agency, had collaborated with international outlets, including the Associated Press and CNN.
Before his death, Eslaiah was the subject of a months-long incitement campaign. Israeli media and online platforms accused him of ties to Hamas, citing a photo with Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and alleging his involvement in the October 7, 2023, attacks—a claim lacking visual evidence. This campaign led to death threats and professional repercussions, including the termination of his collaborations with major news organizations.
The Israeli military stated that the airstrike targeted Hamas operatives using the hospital as a command center. However, Gaza health officials reported that the strike resulted in the deaths of Eslaiah and another patient, as well as injuries to several others.
Eslaiah’s death has intensified concerns about the safety of journalists in conflict zones. According to the International Federation of Journalists, over 160 journalists have been killed in Gaza since the onset of the war, marking an unprecedented toll on media personnel.
The incident has sparked debates over press freedom, the targeting of journalists, and the ethical responsibilities of media organizations in conflict reporting. Advocacy groups continue to call for investigations into attacks on journalists and for measures to ensure their protection by international law.
