The death toll of journalists in Gaza continues to rise, sparking renewed demands for justice and accountability. According to press advocacy groups, more than 220 journalists have been killed since the start of the war in October 2023. The latest incident involved the death of journalist Hilmi al-Faqawi, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike on a tent used by journalists near Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. The strike also injured at least nine other media workers.
The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate condemned the attack, calling it a deliberate and systematic targeting of journalists. The Syndicate has urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate the deaths as war crimes, emphasizing that the targeting of media personnel violates international humanitarian law. Their appeal is not isolated—numerous human rights organizations and legal advocacy groups have echoed the demand for international accountability.
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has already filed multiple complaints with the ICC, asserting that the attacks against journalists in Gaza reflect a deliberate strategy. RSF’s most recent filing includes nine new cases of journalists killed in Israeli airstrikes and accuses the Israeli military of failing to protect media workers and of deliberately obstructing press freedom.
Similarly, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has submitted evidence to the ICC alleging that Israel’s actions amount to war crimes. They point to repeated incidents where journalists were targeted while identified as press and while performing their professional duties. IFJ also highlights a consistent failure to investigate or prosecute those responsible.
Legal firm Bindmans LLP has joined the push by formally filing an ICC complaint on behalf of journalists and civil society organizations. The complaint accuses Israeli authorities of systematically targeting journalists to suppress independent reporting and control the narrative emerging from Gaza.
These calls for justice mark a growing international outcry against the mounting death toll among journalists. Advocates argue that without accountability, the cycle of violence against the press will only worsen, undermining the fundamental right to report from conflict zones and the public’s right to know.
