Palestinian Journalist Killed in Israeli Airstrike Amid Growing Death Toll on Media Workers
April 6, 2025April 6 , 2025 – Palestine/Israel –
In February 2025, Palestinian journalist and sports announcer Saeed Hasanein was arrested by Israeli authorities following his appearance on Al-Aqsa TV, a channel affiliated with Hamas. The 62-year-old from Shefa-Amr faces charges of “contact with a foreign agent,” “expressing solidarity with a terrorist organization,” and “destroying evidence.” Israeli prosecutors allege that his interview, which included praise for Hamas and Hezbollah figures, constituted support for terrorist organizations and dissemination of their narratives within Israel.
Hasanein’s legal team contends that the charges are politically motivated and part of a broader crackdown on Palestinian journalists and dissenting voices. They argue that his statements fall under freedom of expression and that his detention lacks a sufficient legal basis.
The Haifa District Court has extended Hasanein’s detention multiple times, most recently until May 13, 2025. During court proceedings, his defense highlighted his age, health issues, and lack of prior criminal record, advocating for house arrest instead of continued detention. The court has considered relocating him to the town of Kafr Manda under strict conditions, including monitoring and restrictions on communication.
In response to his arrest, the Israeli Government Press Office revoked Hasanein’s press credentials pending a formal hearing. Additionally, he was dismissed from his roles at Bnei Sakhnin Football Club and Radio Al-Nas due to his controversial remarks.
Hasanein’s case underscores the tensions surrounding press freedom and freedom of expression in Israel, particularly concerning Palestinian journalists. International organizations have expressed concern over the increasing number of Palestinian journalists facing legal action or detention, viewing such measures as attempts to suppress critical reporting and dissenting opinions.
