On March 18, 2025, Somali journalist Mohamed Abukar Mohamed, widely known as Dabaashe, was killed in a bomb attack in Mogadishu. The explosion, claimed by the militant group Al-Shabaab, targeted the convoy of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud near the Ceel Gaabta area. While the president was unharmed, the blast caused the collapse of a nearby building, resulting in multiple casualties, including Dabaashe.
Dabaashe, 31, was a freelance journalist who had previously worked with Risaala Radio and TV and was associated with Sirta TV at the time of his death. He was reportedly on his way to work when the explosion occurred, leading to the building’s collapse that claimed his life. His body was recovered from the rubble several hours later by family and colleagues
His death marks the first journalist fatality in Somalia in 2025 and underscores the persistent dangers faced by media professionals in the country. The Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) condemned the attack, emphasizing the perilous conditions under which journalists operate in Somalia. SJS Secretary General Abdalle Mumin highlighted Dabaashe’s dedication to journalism and called for an urgent and independent investigation to hold those responsible accountable.
International organizations also expressed their concerns. UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay deplored Dabaashe’s death and called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding it. She emphasized the vital role journalists play in informing the public and urged all parties to respect their work and ensure their safety by international law.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) echoed these sentiments, urging Somali authorities to investigate the killing and ensure that journalists can perform their duties without fear of reprisal. CPJ also reported that at least 22 other individuals were arrested for reporting on the attack, highlighting the broader challenges to press freedom in Somalia.
Dabaashe’s tragic death serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by journalists in conflict zones and the pressing need for measures to protect media workers and uphold press freedom.
