March 14, 2025March 14, 2025 – Lagos –
A group of journalists was violently attacked while reporting on the demolition of homes in the Otumara community, located in the Ilaje area of Lagos Mainland. The assailants, suspected to be affiliated with the Lagos State government, targeted media personnel from six to seven different outlets, resulting in multiple injuries and the destruction of equipment.
Among the journalists assaulted were Segun Adeboboye of Control TV, Oluwatosin Sanni of News Buster, Gbenga Adewale of Seefame News, Seyi Fadoro of Distinct Media, Oluwaseun Adeola Oluwole of Integrity News, Wasiu Ayinde of LTV8, Mr. Stevens of Kaftan TV, and Aigboje Ikhuoria of ITV. The attack occurred as they prepared to cover a press conference organized by Egbe Omo Ilaje Worldwide, following the demolition that displaced over 5,000 residents.
Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants arrived in a vehicle bearing a license plate linked to the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). Armed with batons, the thugs beat the journalists, confiscated their phones and gadgets, and damaged their equipment. Segun Adeboboye recounted being struck multiple times and noted that the swift intervention of community members prevented more severe injuries.
The demolition in Otumara, which began on March 7, 2025, has faced criticism from human rights organizations. Amnesty International condemned the forced eviction of over 10,000 residents, stating that it was carried out without consultation, adequate notice, compensation, or alternative housing, in violation of international human rights laws. The organization also highlighted that the eviction defied a subsisting court order from June 22, 2017.
The attack on journalists underscores the growing concerns about press freedom and the safety of media personnel in Nigeria. It also highlights the broader issues surrounding forced evictions and the treatment of vulnerable communities in Lagos.
