Journalists Attacked While Covering Otumara Demolition in Lagos
March 14, 2025March 14, 2025 – Syria –
Three news crews came under fire while covering violent clashes in Syria, according to a report by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) released on March 14, 2025. The incidents occurred as fighting intensified between armed factions in the northwestern region of the country. These assaults are part of a growing pattern of violence against journalists in war zones, raising concerns about press freedom and safety.
The first attack happened in the Idlib region, where a crew from the local Orient TV was fired upon while filming from a marked press vehicle. A journalist was shot in the leg and had to be rushed to a medical facility for treatment. Another team from a regional Arabic-language broadcaster came under similar gunfire while trying to document the aftermath of the clashes. Though they managed to escape without injuries, their vehicle was severely damaged.
In a separate incident, a third crew, working for an international news agency, was stopped at a checkpoint by masked gunmen who forcibly removed the journalists from their vehicle. The crew was briefly detained, and their equipment was seized. Though they were released hours later, they reported being physically assaulted and threatened with further violence if they returned to the area.
CPJ condemned the attacks, urging Syrian authorities and armed groups to protect journalists rather than target them. The organization stressed that journalists must be allowed to report freely and safely, especially in areas where accurate information is critical. CPJ noted that this wave of violence is not isolated, pointing to a history of impunity in Syria when it comes to crimes against the press.
The recent incidents are a stark reminder of the dangers journalists face in conflict zones. Despite wearing press vests and traveling in marked vehicles, they are still viewed as targets by hostile actors. The attacks not only endanger lives but also suppress critical reporting on a conflict that continues to affect millions. CPJ is calling for a thorough investigation and accountability for those responsible, urging all sides in the Syrian conflict to respect international norms regarding the protection of journalists.
