The global community must urgently demand justice for Palestinian journalists in Gaza, who have been systematically targeted during Israel’s military operations since October 2023. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), 85 journalists were killed by Israeli forces in 2024, and 78 in 2023, making it the deadliest period for journalists in recorded history.
Palestinian journalists, such as Ismail al-Ghoul and Rami al-Rifi, have been deliberately targeted while reporting in Gaza City, even when identifiable as media personnel. Despite these attacks, international bodies have failed to hold Israel accountable, allowing a cycle of impunity to persist.
The international community must take immediate action to protect journalists and ensure accountability for these violations. This includes pressuring governments to uphold international law, supporting independent investigations into these incidents, and amplifying the voices of Palestinian journalists who continue to report under extreme conditions.
As the anniversary of these tragic events approaches, it is imperative that the global community stands in solidarity with Palestinian journalists and demands justice for those who have lost their lives in the pursuit of truth.
