On the night of February 25–26, 2025, Ukrainian journalist Tetyana Kulyk was tragically killed in a Russian drone strike on her home in the village of Kriukivshchyna, near Bucha, Kyiv region. The attack also claimed the life of her husband, Pavlo Ivanchov, a surgeon and professor at the Bogomolets National Medical University. The couple’s home was destroyed in the ensuing fire, and their bodies were discovered by rescue teams upon arrival.
Kulyk was a prominent journalist and editor-in-chief of the multimedia department at Ukrinform, Ukraine’s national news agency. She was also the author and host of the “Nation of the Invincible” project, a series of interviews highlighting the resilience of Ukrainians during the ongoing war. Her work contributed significantly to documenting Ukraine’s struggle and the strength of its people.
The International Press Institute (IPI) and its partners in the Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR) expressed their shock and sadness following Kulyk’s death. They emphasized the importance of protecting journalists and ensuring accountability for such attacks, which constitute a grave violation of international humanitarian law.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) also condemned the killing, calling for a thorough and transparent investigation and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. UNESCO’s Secretary-General Audrey Azoulay reminded that attacks intentionally targeting journalists are considered war crimes under international law.
Kulyk’s death underscores the perilous conditions faced by journalists in conflict zones. Her colleagues and the international community continue to honor her memory and advocate for the protection of journalists worldwide.
