Viktoria Dmytrenko, a journalist for My—Ukraina TV, was physically assaulted while reporting on a murder trial at the Shevchenkivskyi District Court in Kyiv. The incident occurred during proceedings related to the death of 16-year-old Maksym Materukhin, who was fatally injured at a Kyiv funicular station in April 2024. The suspect, Artem Kosov, an employee of the State Protection Department, was charged with premeditated murder.
According to eyewitness accounts and video footage, a woman, identified as the mother of the accused, approached Dmytrenko, slapped her in the face, and forcibly removed her mobile phone, throwing it to the ground and damaging the screen. The attack was captured on video and shared publicly, prompting widespread condemnation.
Dmytrenko filed a police report citing assault and obstruction of journalistic activities. The Kyiv police initiated an investigation into the incident, and a forensic medical examination was conducted to assess the extent of her injuries.
The attack on Dmytrenko is part of a broader pattern of violence against journalists in Ukraine. In February 2025 alone, the Institute of Mass Information recorded 14 violations of press freedom, including physical assaults and threats against media workers.
International organizations have condemned the assault on Dmytrenko, emphasizing the importance of protecting journalists and ensuring their safety while performing their duties. The incident underscores the challenges faced by media professionals in Ukraine and highlights the need for stronger protections for press freedom.
