Press Freedom Concerns Grow in Croatia After Journalist Harassed by Split Mayor
January 26, 2025January 26, 2025 – Turkey/ Nigeria –
Nigerian football star Victor Osimhen has filed a defamation lawsuit against Turkish journalist Tolga Bozduman, following allegations that the striker assaulted him in Istanbul. The controversy erupted after Galatasaray’s 3-3 draw with Dynamo Kyiv, when Bozduman claimed that Osimhen physically attacked him outside a restaurant.
According to Bozduman, the altercation occurred as he attempted to photograph Osimhen. The journalist alleged that Osimhen tried to grab his camera, punched him in the head, and later offered him money to delete the footage. Bozduman said, “He tried to grab my camera… then he punched me. My head hurt badly.” These claims quickly made headlines in Turkish and international media, casting a shadow over Osimhen’s stellar season with Galatasaray.
Osimhen, however, has categorically denied the accusations. In his statement, the Nigerian international explained that he was leaving an African restaurant and was harassed by paparazzi taking unsolicited photos. He admitted to asking Bozduman to delete the pictures but firmly denied any physical confrontation. “I told them they had to delete my photos. If I wanted to hit him, I would have. I have never hit anyone in my life,” Osimhen said. His friend and fellow footballer Kenneth Omeruo, who was present during the incident, also defended Osimhen, stating, “Of course he didn’t touch him. I was there.”
Determined to clear his name, Osimhen proceeded with legal action, filing a defamation case in a Turkish court. Speaking about the lawsuit, he stated, “If I hit him, he’s going to get justice. But if he lied, he’s going to face the wrath of the law.”
Despite the controversy, Osimhen remains focused on his football career, continuing to deliver strong performances for Galatasaray. So far this season, he has scored 16 goals and provided five assists in 21 appearances, playing a key role in the club’s pursuit of domestic and European success.
The legal battle highlights the growing tension between public figures and media intrusion, raising important questions about privacy rights, press freedom, and the responsibilities of journalists in reporting on celebrities.
