Egypt continues its harsh campaign against journalists and activists, employing systematic repression to silence dissent and control the flow of information. Recent investigations by Daraj Media and Amnesty International expose how the Egyptian government has escalated its attacks on press freedom, targeting independent voices through arbitrary arrests, vague legal charges, and prolonged detentions.
Daraj Media highlights how journalists and activists in Egypt face charges such as “spreading false news,” “misusing social media,” “joining a banned group,” and increasingly, “financing terrorism.” These accusations allow authorities to detain individuals indefinitely, often without trial or proper legal proceedings. Many are arrested during nighttime raids, subjected to incommunicado detention, and denied access to legal counsel or family visits. The judicial system, rather than offering protection, has become a tool of state repression, with pre-trial detentions frequently extended without justification.
Amnesty International reports a fresh wave of arrests, including the recent detention of a journalist and a cartoonist in early morning raids. One of the detainees experienced enforced disappearance, held secretly without any official acknowledgment of his location or legal status. Authorities continue to justify such detentions under national security pretexts, accusing individuals of terrorism-related offenses and spreading misinformation, often without credible evidence.
International organizations, including Human Rights Watch, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), and the International Commission of Jurists, have condemned Egypt’s actions. They emphasize that the misuse of terrorism and false news laws violates fundamental rights and has made Egypt one of the world’s leading jailers of journalists. Reports of torture, enforced disappearances, and unlawful detentions have become increasingly common, drawing global criticism and demands for urgent reforms.
Despite mounting international pressure, the Egyptian government remains defiant, continuing its campaign to stifle free expression. Rights groups stress the need for immediate legislative changes, independent judicial oversight, and global advocacy to end these systematic abuses and protect the basic freedoms of journalists, activists, and all Egyptian citizens.
