As Donald Trump begins his second term as U.S. President, Amnesty International has issued a strong warning, highlighting the potential rollback of critical human rights protections in the United States and across the Americas.
In a joint statement released on January 21, 2025, Amnesty International’s regional directors across the Americas expressed deep concern over Trump’s anticipated policies. They warned that his hardline agenda could worsen the treatment of migrants, weaken protections for asylum seekers, and encourage authoritarian practices in neighboring countries. Ana Piquer, Amnesty’s Americas director, emphasized that Trump’s policies may trigger a wave of human rights violations across the region, particularly affecting vulnerable communities seeking safety in the U.S.
In a separate statement on January 20, Amnesty International USA called on President Trump to uphold human rights, warning that his first term was marked by divisive rhetoric, anti-immigrant policies, and attacks on civil liberties. The organization urged him to protect reproductive rights, address gun violence, ensure healthcare access, and respect the rights of migrants, protesters, and journalists.
Amnesty also expressed concern that Trump’s second term may accelerate restrictions on civil society, free speech, and judicial independence. Within his first 100 days, they observed what they called a “human rights emergency,” citing aggressive deportation policies, intimidation of activists, and proposals that threatened LGBTQ+ and reproductive rights.
The organization warned that the implications of Trump’s domestic policies could ripple beyond U.S. borders, emboldening authoritarian leaders elsewhere in the Americas. Amnesty has committed to mobilizing its global movement to hold the U.S. government accountable and to resist policies that threaten human dignity and freedom.
Amnesty’s message is clear: respect for human rights must not depend on political shifts. As Trump resumes leadership, global civil society must remain vigilant to protect the rights of all, especially the most marginalized. The fight for justice, equality, and freedom continues.
