Pakistan’s Cybercrime Law Becomes Tool for Silencing Journalists
December 15, 2024December 15, 2024 – Palestine/Israel –
Al Jazeera Media Network has condemned the killing of its Palestinian cameraman Ahmad al-Louh in a targeted Israeli airstrike on December 15, 2024, in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. Al-Louh, who was wearing press identification gear, was documenting Civil Defence rescue operations when the strike hit, killing him and five emergency workers. His death, the network stated, represents not only a personal tragedy but also a grave violation of international humanitarian law protecting journalists in conflict zones.
In a strongly worded statement, Al Jazeera described the attack as a deliberate targeting of a media professional performing his duties. The network called on international institutions, including the International Criminal Court, to investigate the incident and hold those responsible to account. It further urged global media organizations, human rights defenders, and press freedom advocates to unite in demanding justice for al-Louh and all journalists killed in the Gaza conflict.
Al Jazeera emphasized that al-Louh was not affiliated with any armed group and posed no threat. His role was to provide accurate, on-the-ground reporting of a humanitarian crisis, a task that has become increasingly dangerous for journalists in Gaza. The network stressed that al-Louh’s death is not an isolated incident but part of a disturbing pattern of attacks against media personnel in the region since the escalation of hostilities in October 2023.
The killing has drawn international criticism, with organizations like Reporters Without Borders and the Committee to Protect Journalists citing it as part of the deadliest period for journalists in modern history. According to these groups, dozens of journalists—most of them Palestinian—have been killed in similar circumstances, many while visibly identified as members of the press.
Doha-based media and international observers echoed Al Jazeera’s call for immediate accountability and legal redress. The network has vowed to continue documenting the conflict and seeking justice for its fallen colleagues. The case of Ahmad al-Louh underscores the urgent need to protect journalists in war zones and reinforces calls for international action to end the impunity surrounding attacks on the press.
