Disappeared in Syria: John Cantlie’s 12‑Year Ordeal Remains Unresolved

Rapid Support Forces (RSF) soldiers brutally raided the home of Sudanese journalist Hanan Adam in Wad Al‑Asha, Al‑Gezira state. Adam, a correspondent for the Communist Party newspaper al‑Midan, and her brother Youssef were both shot dead at the scene. Their deaths are a harrowing illustration of the extreme dangers faced by Sudanese media professionals during the ongoing civil war.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) denounced the killings as part of an escalating campaign of violence by the RSF against journalists and civilians. CPJ’s Interim MENA Program Coordinator described the family’s murder as “brutal” and called for immediate accountability for those responsible. Meanwhile, the International Federation of Journalists and the Sudanese Journalists Syndicate condemned the attack and urged a full investigation, warning that similar tragedies have occurred repeatedly since the war began.
UNESCO Director‑General Audrey Azoulay spoke out on December 30, strongly condemning the killing and stressing that journalists and media workers are civilians who must be protected during conflict. She called for a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. UNESCO’s statement highlighted the vital role journalists play and warned against the climate of impunity enabling their targeting.
Hanan Adam’s heartbreaking death is part of a broader pattern of RSF violence, documented by human rights groups and media advocates. At least five other journalists were killed by RSF forces earlier in 2024, marking Sudan as the deadliest place for African journalists this year. The ongoing war between RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces has brought widespread atrocities, including shelling of civilian areas, mass massacres in Al‑Geizera, and mounting evidence of war crimes on both sides.
Adam’s killing underscores the profound risks journalists face as they strive to report under brutal conditions. As Sudan lapses into a humanitarian and media calamity, international voices are demanding action: independent investigations, legal accountability, and protections that go beyond rhetoric. Without such measures, the vicious cycle of violence and injustice will continue, and the public’s ability to access truthful information will be irreparably compromised.
