Guinea Under Fire After Journalist Habib Marouane Camara Abducted by Armed Men
December 7, 2024December 6, 2024 – Palestine/Israel –
Israeli troops arrested three Palestinian journalists in Sinjil, a town north of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank. The detentions occurred as journalists were covering events in the area; no official charges were immediately disclosed.
This incident marks the latest in a sharp rise of press suppression in the West Bank and Gaza since October 7, 2023. According to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), at least 76 Palestinian journalists and media workers have been detained by Israeli forces—50 of whom remain held, including 20 under administrative detention—a process allowing arrests without formal charges based on undisclosed “security” information. This reflects a broader strategy aimed at intimidating and silencing those documenting the occupation.
The Middle East Eye report emphasizes that these arrests are happening amid growing “intimidation and exclusion of journalists” from conflict sites, undermining their ability to report freely. Sinjil—a hotbed for protests and settler activity—has seen repeated raids where media personnel are often targeted first. Although Israeli forces claim such arrests are for security reasons, press freedom advocates argue journalism is being criminalized under vague pretexts.
These deportations and detentions follow a pattern that includes other recent actions: Israeli forces have used live ammunition and tear gas against journalists, raided media offices (notably Al Jazeera’s premises in the West Bank), and labeled independent reporters as “terrorists”—despite wearing clear press credentials. The actions coincide with broader measures—like a controversial law allowing the government to close foreign news outlets—that severely restrict media operations and diminish public access to independent reporting
