In a chilling reminder of the dangers facing journalists in military-ruled Guinea, investigative reporter Habib Marouane Camara, founder of the news site LeRévélateur224, was abducted on December 3, 2024, by uniformed men believed to be affiliated with the country’s security forces. The attack occurred in the capital, Conakry, while Camara was in his car with a companion. Witnesses reported that masked men in police or military gear smashed his windshield, beat him unconscious with batons, and dragged him away without presenting any warrant or identifying themselves.
Camara had been outspoken in his criticism of Guinea’s ruling military junta, led by General Mamady Doumbouya, who seized power in 2021. His reporting had focused on human rights abuses and corruption, making him a frequent target of harassment. The abduction has sparked national and international outrage, especially as Camara’s whereabouts remained unknown for several days following his violent detention.
The Dixinn prosecutor’s office announced a formal investigation, noting the arrest was not legally sanctioned. Authorities ordered the Central Directorate of Judicial Police (DCPJ) to trace those responsible and to clarify whether any judicial process had been followed—initial signs suggest it had not. Guinea’s National Union of Press Professionals condemned the action, warning that it signals a dangerous escalation in the junta’s clampdown on press freedom.
Global advocacy groups reacted swiftly. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) demanded Camara’s immediate release and a transparent investigation, with CPJ’s Angela Quintal expressing “deep concern” for his safety. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) echoed the call for accountability, urging Guinea’s transitional government to respect journalists’ rights.
The incident fits a growing pattern of repression in Guinea, where the junta has delayed elections, restricted internet access, and silenced dissenting media. As domestic pressure grows and international scrutiny intensifies, the abduction of Habib Marouane Camara has become emblematic of Guinea’s deteriorating press environment—and a test of whether the transitional authorities will uphold any semblance of justice or continue their authoritarian slide.
