Australia’s national broadcaster, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), emerged as the biggest winner at the 2026 Tasmanian Media Awards after securing 11 awards across multiple journalism categories, highlighting the broadcaster’s strong performance in public interest and regional reporting.
The awards, organized by the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA), were held in Hobart and recognized outstanding journalism produced in Tasmania during the past year. ABC journalists won more than half of the 20 categories presented during the ceremony, reflecting the organization’s continued influence within Australian media and regional news coverage.
While the ABC dominated the awards overall, the prestigious Journalist of the Year title went to WIN News reporter Brent Costelloe for his reporting on the Tasmanian government’s controversial proposal to phase out greyhound racing. Judges described his coverage as exceptional and awarded the same investigation the prize for best breaking news coverage.
ABC’s wins covered a wide range of categories, including investigative reporting, digital journalism, public affairs coverage, feature writing, and regional storytelling. The broadcaster’s success was widely viewed as recognition of its continued investment in local journalism and accountability reporting across Tasmania.
According to reports following the ceremony, judges praised the quality of entries submitted this year and highlighted the importance of journalism that serves local communities and examines issues of public concern. The MEAA awards are considered among Australia’s most respected regional journalism honors and regularly spotlight investigative and community-focused reporting.
Media analysts noted that the strong performance by the ABC comes at a time when Australian news organizations continue facing financial pressures, newsroom restructuring, and competition from digital platforms. Regional journalism in particular has become increasingly important as local newspapers and broadcasters across Australia struggle with declining advertising revenue and staffing cuts.
The recognition also reinforced the ABC’s reputation as one of Australia’s leading public broadcasters. The organization has historically received major national journalism honors, including Walkley Awards and MEAA media prizes, for investigative and public service reporting.
Journalists and media organizations across Australia congratulated the winners following the event, with many emphasizing the importance of independent and regional journalism in maintaining public accountability and informing local communities. The Tasmanian Media Awards were seen as another indication of the continuing relevance of high-quality local reporting despite growing challenges facing the media industry worldwide.
