Veteran television photojournalist Jim Mastri was posthumously inducted into the NATAS Silver Circle, recognizing his decades-long contribution to broadcast journalism and mentorship within the Chicago media community.
Mastri, who worked with ABC7 Chicago for many years, was honored during a ceremony organized by the Chicago/Midwest chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The Silver Circle distinction recognizes media professionals who have made significant contributions to the television industry for at least twenty-five years. Colleagues and former coworkers described Mastri as a respected and influential figure whose work helped shape local television journalism in Chicago.
Mastri died in 2024 following a battle with pancreatic cancer. During his career, he became known for his visual storytelling, field reporting expertise, and mentorship of younger journalists and photographers entering the television news industry. Colleagues praised his ability to capture emotionally powerful stories while maintaining professionalism under demanding newsroom conditions.
The ceremony also included recognition connected to the “Take Your Shot” scholarship initiative established in Mastri’s memory. The scholarship was created to support aspiring photojournalists and encourage the next generation of visual storytellers pursuing careers in broadcast journalism. Media professionals involved in the program said the initiative reflects Mastri’s longstanding commitment to mentoring young journalists and supporting newsroom development.
Broadcast journalism advocates noted that photojournalists often play a critical yet underrecognized role within television newsrooms, documenting major events, producing visual narratives, and operating in high-pressure reporting environments. Television photographers and camera operators frequently face physical risks while covering breaking news, disasters, protests, and conflict situations.
Media analysts also highlighted the growing challenges facing local television journalism amid newsroom restructuring, technological change, and financial pressures affecting regional broadcasters across the United States. Supporters of local journalism argue that experienced photojournalists remain essential for maintaining strong community reporting and preserving visual records of important public events.
Colleagues described Mastri’s induction into the Silver Circle as recognition not only of his technical skill, but also of his influence on newsroom culture and mentorship within the journalism profession. Press and media advocates continue emphasizing the importance of supporting and honoring journalists whose work strengthens local reporting, public information, and community storytelling.
