Maldives Journalists Call for Stronger Political Safeguards Amid Growing Press Freedom Concerns

A group of Maldivian media organisations and press freedom advocates has renewed calls for stronger institutional safeguards to protect journalists, urging authorities and regional partners to take firmer action against what they describe as increasing political and legal pressures on independent media in the country. The appeal highlights concerns over declining media freedom, rising regulatory control, and a growing number of disputes between journalists and state institutions.

According to reports, ten organisations representing journalists and media rights defenders jointly addressed ministers for European affairs, warning that recent developments in the Maldives reflect broader regional trends of shrinking civic space and weakened protections for press independence. They argued that without clear political commitments and enforceable safeguards, journalists could face further restrictions on their ability to report freely on governance and public accountability issues.
