Three individuals in the United States have been federally charged following the assault of a journalist during a protest in Minnesota, in a case that has raised renewed concerns about the safety of reporters covering politically charged events.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the charges stem from an incident on April 11, 2026, when journalist Savanah Hernandez, a contributor to Turning Point USA, was attacked while reporting on an anti-immigration enforcement protest outside a federal building in St. Paul. Prosecutors allege that Hernandez was targeted while lawfully documenting the demonstration.
A federal grand jury indicted three members of the same family, Christopher, Deyanna, and Paige Ostroushko, in connection with the incident. Christopher and Paige face charges of assault and interference with a federally protected activity, while Deyanna has been charged with assault.
Authorities allege that Hernandez was surrounded by protesters, physically assaulted, and pushed to the ground after being identified as a journalist affiliated with a conservative media organization. Reports indicate that the confrontation escalated rapidly during the protest, which had drawn demonstrators opposing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations.
Video footage reviewed by investigators reportedly shows multiple individuals engaging in the assault. Hernandez sustained injuries, including bruising and other physical harm, according to accounts cited in reporting on the case.
The Department of Justice emphasized that the charges include interference with a federally protected activity, underscoring the legal protections afforded to individuals engaged in newsgathering in public spaces. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche described the alleged attack as an unacceptable act of violence against a journalist performing her duties.
The case is being pursued at both the federal and state levels. In addition to the federal indictment, Christopher Ostroushko also faces a separate state-level assault charge.
Legal proceedings are ongoing, with the defendants scheduled to appear in court in May 2026. The accused have indicated they intend to contest the charges, with defense arguments expected to focus on the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
The incident highlights the growing risks faced by journalists reporting from protest environments, where tensions between demonstrators and media workers can escalate into violence. Press freedom advocates have repeatedly warned that such attacks, regardless of political context, undermine the ability of journalists to operate safely and document public events.
