A 29-year-old man has pleaded guilty in connection with a violent assault on Indo-Canadian journalist Rishi Kumar (also reported as Rishi Nagar), who serves as news director at RED FM Calgary. The incident, which occurred in September 2024, has been widely reported in Canadian and international media, with court proceedings confirming the latest development in the case.
Court documents show that the accused, identified as Dilpreet Singh, admitted guilt to assault causing bodily harm in relation to the attack. The plea was entered before a court in Calgary, Alberta, marking a key step in the legal process more than a year after the incident took place.
The assault took place when the journalist was leaving a community event at a banquet hall in northeast Calgary. Reports indicate that he was approached in a parking area by two individuals, and after a brief interaction, the situation escalated into a physical attack. Singh was accused of punching the journalist and causing serious injuries, including significant damage to his eye.
Medical reports and victim statements highlighted the severity of the injuries, with the journalist requiring treatment that included eye-related surgery. The assault resulted in long-term health concerns, including the risk of further complications to vision.
According to reporting from multiple outlets, the confrontation was allegedly linked to dissatisfaction with broadcast content related to sensitive community issues. However, court proceedings focused strictly on the assault charge, and the guilty plea now confirms criminal liability in the case.
The case has also drawn broader attention due to its implications for press freedom and journalist safety in Canada. At the time of the incident, the attack was condemned by public officials and media freedom advocates, who emphasized that violence against journalists poses a direct threat to democratic reporting environments.
With the guilty plea entered, sentencing considerations are expected to follow, including potential immigration consequences for the accused, as noted in court discussions.
The case remains a significant example cited in discussions about rising risks faced by journalists reporting on sensitive community and crime-related issues in diaspora media environments.
