Palestinian journalist Amal Mohammed Al-Shamali has been killed in an Israeli attack targeting tents sheltering displaced civilians in central Gaza, according to Palestinian media reports and official statements. The killing adds to the growing toll of journalists who have died while covering the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip.
According to reports, Shamali was killed during an Israeli bombardment that struck tents housing displaced families in the Al-Sawarka area near the Nuseirat refugee camp. The strike reportedly killed several civilians and injured others who had been living in temporary shelters after fleeing earlier fighting.
Shamali worked as a correspondent for Qatar Radio and was also involved with several local and regional media outlets in Gaza. Colleagues and media organizations said she had continued reporting despite the severe risks journalists face while covering the conflict.
Palestinian officials confirmed that the attack also killed a child and another woman, while around ten other people were injured when the shelling struck the encampment where displaced families had gathered.
The Government Media Office in Gaza said Shamali’s death raised the number of Palestinian journalists killed since the beginning of the war in October 2023 to 261, making the conflict one of the deadliest in modern history for media workers.
Palestinian media organizations and journalists’ unions condemned the killing and called for international intervention to protect reporters working in the territory. They urged global media groups and human rights organizations to investigate attacks on journalists and ensure accountability for those responsible.
Journalists in Gaza continue to operate under extremely hazardous conditions, often reporting from areas affected by heavy bombardment while facing displacement, limited protective equipment, and severe restrictions on movement. Despite these challenges, many local reporters have continued documenting the humanitarian impact of the war and providing updates to international audiences.
Press freedom advocates say the continued deaths of journalists highlight the urgent need for stronger protections for media workers in conflict zones and for independent investigations into attacks that result in their deaths.
The killing of Amal Shamali underscores the risks faced by journalists reporting from Gaza, where local reporters remain among the few sources able to document events on the ground amid ongoing military operations and limited access for international media.
