Senegalese Commentator Arrested After Remarks on Student’s Death

The newly formed government of Bangladesh has publicly vowed to foster a media landscape free from fear and intimidation, with Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan emphasising protections for journalists and the free flow of information as key policy priorities. The pledge comes in the wake of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led cabinet’s inauguration earlier in February 2026.
Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting at the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka, Swapan said that the government recognises the “mental distress” that journalists experience when reporting under conditions of constant surveillance or apprehension and reiterated the administration’s intent to support independent journalism without fear. He stated that ensuring a “fear-free environment for journalism” and establishing mechanisms to secure the free flow of information are high priorities in its policy agenda.
The minister, whose portfolio was assigned as part of the 50-member cabinet headed by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, described media freedom as one of the political commitments underpinning the new government’s platform. He referenced past efforts — including a media freedom commission formed by the interim government — and said that proposals generated by that commission are now being reviewed to shape clearer policies for press protection and information transparency.
Swapan’s remarks were echoed in engagements with journalist groups in Barishal as part of a broader discussion marking International Mother Language Day and Martyrs’ Day, where he reiterated that the government would work to remove fear and intimidation from journalistic practice while also addressing broader national development goals.
The pledge reflects heightened public attention to press freedom in Bangladesh following years of contested media environments. Advocates and press organisations have previously highlighted episodes of harassment and legal pressures against journalists, underscoring the importance of concrete policy actions to protect independent reporting. As the newly elected BN P government begins its term, the minister’s statements signal an official commitment to strengthening media autonomy, though observers note that implementation and legal safeguards will be key to measuring progress on these promises.
