An Indian court in Gujarat has sentenced journalist Ravi Nair to one year in prison and imposed a fine after finding him guilty in a criminal defamation case filed by Adani Enterprises, according to court documents and multiple media reports.
Reuters reported that Adani Enterprises filed the complaint in 2021, alleging that Nair’s social media posts made unverified claims suggesting political patronage, financial irregularities, and unethical conduct. The court said Nair did not produce documentary material or verified data to substantiate the allegations and concluded the posts portrayed the company in a disreputable light.
Nair told Reuters he plans to appeal the conviction, but declined further comment. The Adani Group did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
Reporting carried by NDTV, citing a syndicated account, said the matter was tried in a magistrate’s court in Mansa, Gandhinagar, which ruled that Adani Enterprises had established its case and found Nair guilty of criminal defamation, sentencing him to a year’s imprisonment and a fine.
The case has renewed scrutiny of India’s criminal defamation framework. Reuters noted that criminal defamation remains on the statute books in India with penalties of up to two years, and that the law survived a challenge in India’s top court in 2016 despite criticism from lawyers, journalists, and activists.
Press freedom organisations also reacted. Reuters cited the Committee to Protect Journalists as expressing deep concern and saying it was monitoring developments.
Separate reporting by Newslaundry described the dispute as centering on Nair’s posts about Adani, and said his counsel argued the remarks were based on publicly available material and should fall within legal exceptions, while the complainant argued the posts were defamatory.
