Tunisian journalist Chatha Belhaj Mubarak has been released from prison after an appeal court cut her sentence, her family confirmed.
An appeal panel in Tunisia reduced her term from five years to two years, making her immediately eligible for release after being jailed since 2023 in a high-profile “Instalingo” conspiracy case that also involved politicians, media figures, and others accused of financial and related offences. Belhaj Mubarak denied the charges throughout the proceedings.
Her brother, Amen Belhaj Mubarak, told Reuters that she has now left prison; he also said her health deteriorated significantly during incarceration, including suffering hearing loss and a cancer diagnosis while detained. Tunisian authorities maintain that the case stems from judicial investigations and reject accusations from opposition groups that the prosecution was politically motivated.
Belhaj Mubarak’s release follows a trend in which Tunisian courts are reviewing sentences in controversial cases involving journalists, activists, and opposition figures, even as prosecutors continue to pursue other high-profile conspiracy cases that have resulted in lengthy terms for politicians and critics.
