A European Union (EU) delegation in Georgia marked the first anniversary of the detention of veteran Georgian journalist Mzia Amaglobeli, founder of the independent outlets Batumelebi and Netgazeti, with renewed appeals for her immediate and unconditional release. The commemoration took place in Tbilisi and underlined persistent concerns among international and local press freedom advocates over her continued imprisonment on charges related to alleged “high treason,” which she and supporters reject as politically motivated.
EU representatives reiterated that Amaglobeli’s detention has raised serious questions about due process, judicial independence, and media freedom in Georgia. In statements delivered at the event, they stressed that press freedom is a core democratic value and called on Georgian authorities to ensure that all legal proceedings against journalists meet international standards of fairness and transparency. The delegation highlighted that credible and independent media play a vital role in public accountability and democratic engagement.
Civil society groups present at the commemoration echoed the EU’s call, underscoring that Amaglobeli has been held for more than 12 months without resolution of her case. They argued that her continued incarceration has a chilling effect on independent journalism in Georgia, where attacks on media freedom have become a focal point of criticism by international observers. The supporters emphasized that her work with Batumelebi and Netgazeti has been central to promoting investigative reporting and local accountability.
The EU delegation’s public commemoration reflects broader international scrutiny of Amaglobeli’s case, which has drawn attention from rights organizations, press freedom networks, and diplomatic missions. They continue to advocate that Georgia uphold its commitments to democratic norms and fundamental rights, including the freedom of expression and protection of journalists, as part of its aspirations for deeper integration with European institutions.
